What is customizing a guitar, and why would you want to?
A house, car, boat, computer, you name it, people are modifiying
what they own to make it personalized. The guitar is no different. A guitar
can be modified in a variety of ways, from just looks, to actual performance
modifications.
The most common modification for an Acoustic guitar, is having
an electronic pickup installed into the guitar. This modification allows the
player to amplify the sound of the acoustic guitar and use a digital tuner. If you play on stage or with a group, having a pickup is a must to keep your sound out front and heard.
There are quite a few brands and styles of pickups available
for an acoustic instrument. We carry some of what we feel are the best. Fishman,
L.R. Baggs, B-Band and EMG.
Styles...
THE UST PICKUP
There are two major styles out now for acoustic guitar. There
is the UST or the "Under saddle Transducer" pickup.
The B-Band UST is in red on the left and the Fishman UST is in Blue in the middle and the LR. Baggs EAS system is on the right. They sit underneath the saddle. The UST style pickups are available in active systems (9-volt pre-amp) and passive (No on-board
pre-amp)
THE AST PICKUP
There is also the AST or the Acoustic Soundboard Transducer
pickup. This pickup, unlike the UST, is installed underneath the bridge plate
inside the guitar body. The difference is that the sound it picks up is through
the wood of the guitar not the bone or plastic saddle.
These are the AST style pickups. The B-Band is on the left
and the LR. Baggs I-BEAM is on the right.
The Endpin Jack pre-amps
These are the standard pre-amps available for the UST and AST pickups made
by Fishman and
B-Band, LR. Baggs and EMG. These small tube like pre-amps replace the factory
end pin with a jack and still retain a guitar strap use.
Side mounted EQ Pre-amps
More advanced pre-amps are avialable for those who require both AST and
the UST, or for those who need more tone control or output control.
These EQ Pre-amps mount on the side of the acoustic guitar body. They use
a endpin jack and a 9v battery.
